I recently retired after 40 years as a commercial executive in the Biotech industry and am now free to pursue my woodworking passion - yay! I also enjoy surfing, masters swimming, following the Los Angeles Dodgers with my Boys and music - especially the Blues. I have a particular interest in using traditional tools and techniques. Just like the pre-industrial craftsmen, I build beautiful solid wood furniture and household items that both beautiful to look at and invite being touched. Over the years I've built a house full of furniture for both my wife and I, and our two Boys. The Boss pointedly told me we have no room for any more furniture in the house, and so here I am!
All my items are hand planed and typically finished with oil/varnish, French hand polished shellac and paste wax to bring our the natural beauty of the grain and figure in the wood. This kind of surface preparation yields a surface very different from commercial furniture of the highest quality. All joinery is hand cut dovetials, mortice & tenon with saws and chisels I'm guaranteed to last multiple lifetimes. I carefully select choice pieces of domestic hardwoods, typically walnut, mahogany, cherry, maple, etc. and carefully plan the layout so that the beautiful grain of these choice materials wraps around the piece in uninterrupted fashion. This design philosophy leads your eye from one end of the piece to the other to appreciate both the form and function of the piece and also the natural beauty of the wood.
I can also customize pieces with a carving or inlay of your initials, name or something else. Most of my pieces take >100 hours to build and my work is definitely a "labor of love" for me .. My intent is whatever piece you get from me will bring you a smile and a little bit of joy every time you see it.
